Jihar Edo tana da iyaka da Jihar Kogi daga arewa maso gabas, Jihar Anambra da ga gabas, Jihar Delta daga kudu maso gabas da kudu maso kudancin jihar, Jihar Ondo kuma daga yamma.[7]

Yankunan Jihar Edo a yau sun haɗa iyaka da masarautun da dauloli da aka kafa tun a ƙarni na 11 miladiyya, harda Masarautar Benin.[8] A shekarar alif 1897, Daular Burtaniya ta ƙaddamar da wata azzalimar ziyara ga yankin Benin, inda suka tarwatsa tsaffin biranen Edo, inda suka haɗe su a cikin yankin da ta zamo Yankin mulkin mallaka na Kudancin Najeriya.[9][10]

Edo jiha ce dake ɗauke da mutane iri-iri musamman Harsunan Edoid da kuma Mutanen Edo ko Bini,[11] Esan, Kabilar Owan, Afemai.[12] Harshen da yafi fice daga cikin yarukan Edo shine Yaren Edo wanda akae yawan amfani dashi a Birnin Benin.[13] Mafi yawa mutanen Jihar mabiya addinin Kiristanci ne. Jimhuriyar ta zo ƙarshe na tsawon yini ɗaya bayan sojojin Najeriya sun kwace birnin Benin City. An ƙirƙiri jihar Edo a ranar 27 ga watan Augustan 1991, a lokacin da aka raba Jihar Bendel zuwa jihohin Edo da Delta.[17][18]

 
Mutanen Edo

Tare da Birnin Benin a matsayin babban birnin jihar, yawan mutanen garin sun kai kimanin mutum miliyan 8.[19] Jihar ta kunshi muhimman kabilu guda hudu sune: Kabilar Edo (mutanen Bini, Owan, Esan, Afemai (Etsakọ da kuma Akoko-Edo). Muhimman kabilun Jihar Edo sun hada da kabilun Bini, Etsako, Esan, Owan da kuma kabilar Akoko Edo.[19] Yawancin wadannan Kabilu sun samo asalli ne daga babban birnin Benin City, a dalilin haka harsunansu sun bambanta ne dangane da nisansu da babban birnin. Kabilar Bini sun mamaye kananan hukumomi guda bakwai daga cikin kananan hukumomi 18 dake jihar kuma sun kwashe kaso 57.54% na yawan mutanen Jihar. Sauran kuma: Esan (17.14%), Etsako (12.19%), Owan (7.43%), da kuma Akoko Edo (5.70%).[19] Amma kuma akwai yarukan dake zaune a yankunan Akoko Edo, su kuma Itsekiri na zaune a yankin Ikpoba-Okha, da kuma harsunan IjawIzons, Urhobos dake zaune a kananan hukumomin Ovia ta Arewa maso Gabas da Kudu maso Yamma da kuma yankunan iyakokin jihar.
