A cewar tarihin zamani da yawa, Elbadawi ya fito ne daga Ƙabilar Larabawa ta asalin Siriya. Musulmi ne na Sufi ta hanyar rinjaye, Elbadawi ya shiga tsarin Rifa'i sufi (wanda sanannen Shafi'i mai sihiri da lauya Ahmad al-Rifaʽi [d. 1182]) ya kafa a farkon rayuwarsa, [1] an fara shi cikin tsari a hannun wani malami Iraqi. Bayan tafiya zuwa Makka, an ce al-Badawi ya yi tafiya zuwa Iraki, "inda tsarkakarsa ta yi imanin cewa ta bayyana kanta a sarari" ta hanyar karamat "mu'ujizai" da aka ce ya yi.[1]

Daga bisani al-Badawi ya tafi Tanta a cikin Sultanate na Masar, inda ya zauna har abada a cikin 1236. Kamar yadda yake tare da kowane babban tsari na Sufi, Badawiyya yana ba da shawarar sarkar ruhaniya ba tare da karya ba na ilimin da aka ba da shi ta hanyar Muhammadu ta hanyar ɗaya daga cikin Abokansa, wanda a cikin yanayin Badawi shine Ali (d. 661).
