An zaɓi Abdul Umar Yandoma Sanata mai wakiltar Katsina ta Arewa (Daura/Ingawa) a Mazaɓar Katsina ta Arewa a Najeriya a farkon jamhuriya ta huɗu ta Najeriya, inda ya tsaya takara a ƙarƙashin jam'iyyar PDP. Ya fara aiki a ranar 29 ga watan Mayu shekarar 1999.[1]

Bayan ya hau kan kujerar majalisar dattawa a watan Yuni shekarar 1999, Yandoma ya zama kwamitocin din-din-din na majalisar dattawa a kan harkokin man fetur, da ma’adanai (shugaban kasa), sufuri, Niger Delta, harkokin gwamnati da kuma babban birnin tarayya[2] A cikin wani binciken da aka yi a watan Disamba na 2001 kan Sanatoci, ThisDay ya kwatanta Yandoma a matsayin "mai zafi", ma'ana bai bayar da gudummawar kadan ba a muhawara ko wasu kasuwanci.[3]

A watan Nuwamban shekara ta 2002 ne aka ruwaito cewa ya tsayar da takarar PDP a Katsina ta Arewa a shekarar 2003 inda ya goyi bayan tsohon ministan harkokin waje, Ambasada Zakari Ibrahim.[4] Sai dai a watan Disambar shekarar 2002 bai yi hamayya ba a yunƙurinsa na zama ɗan takarar jam'iyyar PDP.[5] Ya fafata da tsohon Sanata Kanti Bello na jam’iyyar ANPP, wanda ya kayar da shi a zaɓen 1999.[6] Kanti Bello ya na so ya lashe zaben.[7]
