Kanar Tanko Zubairu shi ne shugaban mulkin soja na jihar Imo ta Najeriya daga cikin watan Agustan na shekara ta alif ɗari tara da casa'in da shida 1996 zuwa watan Mayun na shekara ta alif ɗari tara da casa'in da tara 1999, lokacin da ya miƙa ragamar mulki ga zaɓaɓɓen gwamnan farar hula Achike Udenwa.[1][2] A lokacin da ya ke mulki, sai da ya fuskanci tashe-tashen hankulan da ake yi kan kashe-kashen al'ada. A cikin shekarar ta alif ɗari tara da casa'in da bakwai 1997 ya sanya hannu kan sammacin zartar da hukuncin kisa ta hanyar harbe wasu mutane shida da ake zargi da wannan laifi.[3] Bob Njemanze, mamba ne na daular Njemanze mai mulki a Owerri, jihar Imo, ya bayyana zaman Zubairu a matsayin na "soja cikin gaggawa ba ko'ina kuma bai kai ko'ina ba".[4]

An ce ya goyi bayan jam'iyyar All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) a zaɓen gwamnan jihar Imo da aka yi a cikin watan Afrilun na shekara ta alif ɗari tara da casa'in da tara 1999, amma a yayin da jam'iyyar PDP ta lashe zaɓen.[5] Bayan miƙawa majalisar, majalisar dokokin Imo ta gayyace shi domin ya yi bayani kan yadda ya tafiyar da jihar. Ya ƙi amincewa da cewa a matsayinsa na jami’in soja ba a buƙatar ya bayar da asusu ga farar hula. Lamarin dai ya ci gaba da jan kunnen kotuna har zuwa shekarar dubu biyu da bakwai 2007, inda kotun ƙolin ta ce ya bayar da shaida idan an nema.[6]

A cikin watan Satumba na shekara ta dubu biyu da takwas 2008 ya kasance shugaban ƙungiyar National Sourcing In-Coverage Global Technocom Ltd (NSICGT), wani shiri mai zaman kansa wanda ke ba da tallafin karatu musamman ga matasan Najeriya.[7]
