Makarantar Koyon Maritime ta Najeriya a Oron na ɗaya daga cikin kwalejojin kimiyya na tarayya waɗanda Hukumar Kula da Jami’o’i ta (asa (NUC) ta amince da su. Asalinsu ana kiransa Kwalejin Nautical of Nigeria, an kafa shi ne a shekara ta 1979 don ilmantarwa da horar da jami'an jirgin ruwa, kimantawa da ma'aikatan gudanarwa na gabar teku. Makarantar ta mallaki babban fili a gefen ruwa a Oron, kusa da hanyoyin Kuros Riba na Port of Calabar a Jihar Kuros Riba kuma kusan kilomita 200 daga Fatakwal, Jihar Ribas . A watan Afrilu na shekara ta 2003, Shugaba Olusegun Obasanjo ya ba da umarnin cewa a fara aikin gina jirgin sama na kwalejin.

A cikin watan Fabrairun shekara ta 2010 Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) ta ce ta ba da gudummawar kayan aikin horas da tsaro na Naira miliyan 30 ga makarantar. Kayan aikin sun hada da kwale-kwalen mutum guda 50 da aka killace, jirgin ruwan ceto da aka kaddamar da mutum goma sha biyu. A watan Oktoba na shekara ta 2008 Karamin Ministan Sufuri, Prince John Okechkwu Emeka, ya ce nan ba da jimawa ba za a inganta makarantar domin zama cibiyar bayar da digiri. Ya kuma yi kira da a kara yawan kudade daga gwamnatin tarayya.

A watan Mayu na shekara ta 2009 makarantar ta fuskanci kakkausar suka daga darakta mai kula da tashar ta Legas. Ya ce hatta hukumar kula da zirga-zirgar jiragen ruwa da kare lafiyar Najeriya ta gano cewa makarantar ba ta cika ka'idojin kasa da kasa ba. A watan Satumbar shekara ta 2009 gwamnati ta sanar da cewa wani aiki da Ma’aikatar Sufuri ta Tarayya ta gabatar, shirin na bunkasa ci gaban teku, zai tura kashin farko na dalibai 27 zuwa Makarantar Koyon Ilimin Maritime da Hora a Kasar Indiya don yin karatun Digiri a Kimiyya da Digiri a fannin injiniya a cikin batutuwan da suka shafi ruwa. A shekara ta 2020, majalisar dattijan Najeriya ta bakin shugaban kwamitin kula da zirga-zirgar jiragen ruwa sun nuna damuwar su game da karfin ma’aikatan jirgin ruwan Najeriya saboda tafiyar jiragen ruwa da ilimi sune muhimman bangarorin ci gaban tattalin arziki ga kasashen da suka dogara da shigowa da fitar da su ta cikin teku.
