Ya kasance mai kawo sauyi a arewacin Indiya wanda ya yi rubuce-rubuce masu yawa don kare Muhammad da kuma shahararriyar ayyukan Sufaye kuma ya zama jagoran wata kungiya mai suna "Ahl-i Sunnat wa Jamaat". Ya rinjayi miliyoyin mutane, kuma a yau ƙungiyar Barelvi tana da kusan miliyan 200 a yankin.

An haifi Khan a ranar 14 ga Yuni 1856 a Mohallah Jasoli, Bareilly, Lardunan Arewa maso Yamma. Sunan da ya yi daidai da shekarar da aka haife shi shi ne "Al Mukhtaar". Sunan haihuwarsa Muhammad[8]. Khan ya yi amfani da roƙon "Abdul Mustafa" ("bawan zaɓaɓɓen") kafin ya sanya hannu kan sunansa a cikin wasiƙa.[3]
