An haifi Ngakane a Pretoria, Afirka ta Kudu.[2] A cikin shekarar 1936, danginsa da shi sun ƙaura zuwa unguwar Sophiatown na Johannesburg.[3] Mahaifinsa (malami) ya kafa masauki tare da Alan Paton, marubucin littafin 1948 Cry, The Beloved Country. Ngakane ya yi karatu a Kwalejin Jami'ar Fort Hare da Jami'ar Witwatersrand, kuma ya yi aiki a kan mujallun Drum da Zonk daga shekarun 1948 zuwa 1950.
