An haife ta ne a Soubré a Ivory Coast, Fatou Keïta ta sami karatun firamare a Bordeaux, inda mahaifinta ke karatun tiyata.[1] Daga baya ta tafi makarantar sakandare a Bouaké, inda ta sami digiri na farko a shekara ta 1974. A shekara ta 1981, ta kammala karatu daga Jami'ar Côte d'Ivoire, kuma ta ci gaba da karatu a Ingila da Amurka. A shekara ta 1995 ta sami tallafin Fulbright kuma ta tafi Jami'ar Virginia a Charlottesville don bincika marubuta mata baƙar fata na Afirka a Amurka da Ingila.[2] Ta ci gaba da zama malami a Sashen Ingilishi na Jami'ar Cocody.[1]
