Esther Ngumbi ta girma ne a gundumar Kwale, al'ummar karkara ne a kasar Kenya.[1][2] An fara gabatar da ita harkar noma tun tana shekara bakwai, lokacin da iyayenta suka ba ta fili ta noman kabeji.[3] Tun tana ƙarama ta fara sanin kalubalen da manoma ke fuskanta da suka haɗa da fari da ƙasa mara kyau. A karon farko da ta bar kauyensu shine ta halarci Jami'ar Kenyatta, inda ta samu digirin farko da na biyu..[4][5] A cikin shekarar 2007 an ba ta lambar yabo ta Ƙungiyar Ƙungiyar Mata ta Jami'ar Amirka (AAUW) ta Ƙasashen Duniya wanda ya ba ta damar kammala digiri a ilimin halitta a Jami'ar Auburn.[1][6][7] A cikin shekarar 2011 ta zama ɗaya daga cikin mutanen farko da suka samu digiri na uku daga cikin al'ummarta.[1][8] Bayan ta sami digiri na uku ta ci gaba da zama a Jami'ar Auburn a matsayin kwararriyar malama.[3]

An naɗa Ngumbi Mataimakiyar Farfesa na Entomology da Nazarin (African-American Studies) a Jami'ar Illinois a Urbana-Champaign a cikin shekarar 2018.[9] Ta kuma koyar da ilimin sadarwa. Ta nazarci yadda tsire-tsire, tsire-tsire, ƙananan ƙwayoyin cuta da kwari ke amfani da siginar sinadarai masu lalacewa da marasa ƙarfi.
