An haifi Davis a Leavenworth, Kansas ga Kanar Robert Davis da Edwina Bailey McCarty,daya daga cikin 'ya'ya mata hudu.Iyalin sun yi balaguro sosai sa’ad da take girma.Ta sami digirin AB daga Kwalejin Randolph-Macon kuma,bayan ɗan gajeren aure a 1934,ta ci gaba da samun digiri na biyu a fannin karatu a Jami'ar Kentucky a 1951.[1]Ta yi aiki a matsayin mai karatu a Sarasota,Florida,kuma yayin da yake can, ta rubuta Jima'i na Farko.

Davis da farko ta yi nufin Jima'i na Farko ya zama " dan gajeren rubutu kan zalunci ga mata " wanda aka yi wahayi zuwa ga mutuwar 'yar'uwarta a 1968.Yayin da ta yi bincike,ta kara koyo game da lokutan tarihi lokacin da mata ke kan mulki,da kuma game da kyamar mata daga baya.[2]Ta bayar da hujjar cewa masu kisan gilla da masu laifi suna da nau'ikan Y-chromosomes guda biyu,cewa maza sun ce ba su damu da mata suna samun nasara ba amma suna bukatar mace yayin da halayen mata ke aiki da nasara,kuma dole ne ma'aurata su maye gurbin magabata na yanzu.[3]Farfesa Ginette Castro ta soki matsayin Davis a matsayin kasa "a cikin tsattsauran ra'ayi na mace."

Davis ta kashe kanta a ranar 30 ga Yuli,1974,ta hanyar harbi kanta.A cewar marubucin mata Andrea Dworkin,kashe kansa na Davis ya yi tasiri sosai saboda fyaden da aka yi mata shekaru kadan kafin 1971,da kuma ciwon daji da ta sha fama da shi.Takardun nata suna hannun ɗakin karatu na bincike na Charles E.Young a UCLA.
