Pvt. John Jamison (CP 1157), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private John Jamison, Company M, 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry, who contracted typhoid fever in a camp near Petersburg, Virginia in November 1864. The bed sores developed in relation to the illness, but the patient received treatment and improved. Attended by Dr. J.C. McKee. Caption reads: “Bed sore. Pvt. Jno Jamison Co. M 1st Pa. Cavy.”

History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., March 4, 1865. Ward 20, Bed 47,--Name, John Jamison, Private, Co. M., 1st Pennsylvania Cav. Admitted to Hospital, December 16, 1864, with prostration, result of Typhoid Fever contracted (in camp near Petersburg, Va., in November and continuing twenty days, after which he was transferred to Lincoln General Hospital. Bed sores occurred, during the attack of Fever, the greater extending over right hip for a space of seven inches in diameter, the smaller ones appearing over sacrum, and posterior spinous processes of hip, and continuing to increase in size, until January, when they were subdued by the application of Liquor Potassae Permanganatis. After treatment, Liquor Sodae Chlorinatae. Present condition of patient good and improving daily, with good appetite and a fair prospect of a recovery. Photographed at Lincoln General Hospital. J.C. McKee, Ass’t Surgeon, U.S.A., in charge.”
