An haifi Sowry a Palmerston North, kuma ya halarci Kwalejin Tararua a Pahiatua inda yake yaro. [2] Iliminsa ya haɗa da musayar Sabis na Filin Amurka zuwa Minnesota a shekarar 1977, da Diploma na Gudanar da Kasuwanci daga Jami'ar Victoria ta Wellington . Ya kuma yi aiki na wani lokaci a matsayin Minista mai kula da Fansho na Yaki, Ministan da ke da alhakin Gidajen gidaje ( gidaje na jihohi ), da Mataimakin Ministan Lafiya. A cikin Janairun shekarar 1999, an ba shi nauyi na musamman don daidaita dangantakar ƙasa da ƙungiyoyin da ta dogara da su don tallafawa ( Mauri Pacific, Mana Wahine, da sauransu).

A cikin Oktoban shekarar 2001, lokacin da Bill English ya kori Jenny Shipley a matsayin shugaban jam'iyyar National Party, Sowry (wanda ya taka muhimmiyar rawa a haɓakar Ingilishi) ya zama mataimakin shugaban ƙasa. Ya ci gaba da kasancewa a wannan matsayi har sai da Don Brash ya kori Ingilishi da kansa a cikin Oktoba 2003. [3]

Har zuwa 2008 ya kasance Babban Babban Daraktan Arthritis New Zealand, [4] daga baya ya koma Saunders Unsworth, [5] a matsayin mai ba da shawara kan lamuran Gwamnati.

A cikin Girmama Sabuwar Shekara ta 2011, an naɗa Sowry a matsayin Jami'in New Zealand Order of Merit don ayyuka a matsayin memba na majalisa. A cikin shekarar 2013, an naɗa Sowry memba na Hukumar Wakilai don ƙayyade iyakokin zaɓe na New Zealand.[6].
