Matarau yana cikin wuraren kididdigar SA1 guda biyu waɗanda suka rufe 15.31 km2 (5.91 sq mi). Yankunan SA1 wani yanki ne na babban yankin kididdiga na Matarau.

Yankunan SA2 suna da yawan jama'a 465 a cikin ƙidayar 2023 New Zealand, haɓakar mutane 18 (4.0%) tun daga ƙidayar 2018, da haɓakar mutane 42 (9.9%) tun daga ƙidayar 2013.[5] Akwai maza 237 da mata 231 a cikin gidaje 144. 1.3% na mutanen da aka gano a matsayin LGBTIQ+. Akwai mutane 102 (21.9%) masu shekaru kasa da shekaru 15, 87 (18.7%) masu shekaru 15 zuwa 29, 210 (45.2%) masu shekaru 30 zuwa 64, da 66 (14.2%) masu shekaru 65 ko sama da haka.[6]

An kafa makarantar a cikin 1877 a matsayin Makarantar Gabas ta Ruatangata. Makarantar Otakairanga ta hade tare da Makarantar Matarau a cikin 1949, kuma Makarantar Ruatangata ta Yamma kuma ta rufe don goyon bayan Matarau a cikin 1973.[10]
