Caesalpinia Bonduc at Frenchman's Forest Natural Area growing near a mangrove creek. This "clambering vine with spiny stems and prickly leaves" is pantropical in its distribution because of its floating "sea bean" seeds. Despite its unruly reputation, it has many redeeming qualities! It is the larval host plant for the Miami Blue and Nickerbean Blue, the flowers are pretty and attract insects, and the seeds have a wide variety of uses including jewelry, prayer beads, good luck charms, weight standards, game pieces and medicinally in many folk remedies! We often played with this (and other sea beans) when I was a child. (There was no PlayStation or Xbox ;-)
