The bear is not likely to go veryfar before the grapple compels him to stop, and therethe trapper finds him. Bears usually keep away from villages and farms;and, as they do most of their roving at night, peopleseldom see them. In the winter they stay in somesnug hiding-place asleep, and do not come out untilthe snow melts off. They are usually fat then, but foodis scarce and they become very lean long before theberries are ripe in the summer. Meanwhile they eatroots, and dig up wild turnips, and they tear rottenlogs and stumps to pieces to get at the big ants whichare inside. If they can make their way into a beetree, they steal the honey, and they are always on thelookout for yellow wasp nests. In the fall the bearspaw over the leaves after beech-nuts. They climb appletrees to get the fruit, and often damage them badly pull-ing in the ends of the Umbs and clawing off the apples.
