eadquarters of a British and Canadian Recruiting Mission— with friendly kilties received as warmly by the local public asthe red-coats of the eighteenth century were detested. Therecruiting stations for the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps of theUnited States were but the modern equivalents of the recruitingtents used on the Common during the Civil War. Without any suchprecedent were the huts of the Y. M. C. A., the Knights of Colum-bus, Salvation Army, and the American Red Cross. The Army andNavy Canteen, in which departing and returning soldiers and sailorsenjoyed the ministrations of a devoted band of local war work-ers, the City of Boston Employment Bureau, the War Camp Com-munity Service, the Boston War Work Council, the United StatesInterdepartmental Social Hygiene Board, the War Service Com-mittee — each of these made its own contribution on the Commonto the welfare of the young men in khaki and blue.
